Lewis Hamilton’s reputation risked by people who drove him down the road to chicanery

There are two ways that the Lewis Hamilton cheating saga can affect his future with McLaren Mercedes, which is now on a knife edge. Either Hamilton and his father Anthony, who manages him, can find a way to forgive and rebuild, or the trauma of what happened at the Australian Grand Prix will weep poison into the relationship and it will eventually fall apart.

Lewis Hamilton will never rid himself of this stigma

I cannot believe how McLaren have pinned themselves into this perilous corner. They have now seriously undermined their image and potentially their sporting prospects over what was originally an innocuous incident in last week’s Australian Grand Prix. Even worse, their relationship with their star driver has been damaged to such an extent that Lewis Hamilton has even considered resigning. They are intelligent people so I struggle to understand how they can behave so recklessly.

Mike Atherton on his Lewis Hamilton moment

The thing about sport is that it is just about the most powerful truth serum there is. Young sportsmen find themselves surrounded by all kinds of helpers, from agents to PR executives, all of whom are on hand to try to polish a certain image and act as a buffer between the sportsman as he is and the sportsman as others would like to see him. But out in the arena, you are on your own, every move watched by dozens of intrusive cameras and millions of prying eyes. Sport delivers, time and again, a brutal truth and a sportsman's essential nature will out - like it or not.
