Ferrari threaten F1 pullout

• Italians say they will leave grand prix grid if budget cap remains• 'Ferrari does not intend to register cars for the 2010 season'Ferrari have threatened to quit formula one at the end of the season if the sport's governing body adopts a budget-cap option for 2010, the Italian company's board said today."No F1 in 2010 if the rules do not change. Ferrari confirms its opposition to the new rules imposed by FIA and does not intend to register cars for the 2010 F1 world championship," said the team in a brief statement.Last weekend Toyota also threatened to leave the sport over the proposed budget caps, and Red Bull have added their voice to the criticism, saying that up to eight teams could leave the grid. Under the new rules, to be introduced next season, teams complying with the £40m cap will be allowed greater technical freedom than those preferring to operate under their own budgets, some of which exceed £80m.Earlier this month the Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said that the cap would bring a "fundamentally unfair and perhaps even biased" championship. Max Mosley, the FIA president, responded that the restrictions were to safeguard the future of the sport and to encourage new teams to join the grid. The FIA has set a deadline of 29 May for teams wishing to compete in 2010 to enter and state if they want to operate under the cap.Ferrari are currently joint sixth in the 2009 constructors' championship after five races, having been hampered by reliability problems.FerrariFormula oneMotor sportguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
