But Jenson Button, once the darling of the British media, remained his usual upbeat self and continued to lift his sights to a 2009 horizon rather than crying over all the performance milk Honda have spilled this season.

Stunning lap secures pole for Lewis Hamilton at Spa

Lewis Hamilton secured the 11th pole position of his Formula One career ahead of tomorrow's Belgian Grand Prix. The world championship leader produced a stunning display around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit to leave Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, his title rivals, in his wake. Hamilton clinched top spot on the grid with a lap of 1min 47.338sec for his fifth pole of the year, with Massa on the front row, but more than 0.3secs down.

Valencia's road race passes its grand prix driving test

In the end, all the scare stories proved wide of the mark, and the first day of running on Valencia's new "urban" circuit was judged a great success. There had been fears that a slight mismatch in height between the track surface and the swivelling section of the bridge between Turn Nine and 10 might generate hard enough impact loadings to create punctures, or that the drivers would be unhappy with the run-off areas at turns Eight, 12 and 17.
